accessible kitchen

accessible kitchen

The foremost goals of this remodel were to create a kitchen which functions for both wheelchair and standing users, to merge the kitchen and family room into a welcoming entertaining space and to design optimal storage. My client and co-collaborator on this project was Shannon Campbell of Home Design 4 Life1. We incorporated accessible features such as 34" high counters with open under-counter seated work areas to accommodate a wheelchair; multiple height work areas; raised dishwasher to reduce bending; pull-out shelving and drawers; pull-down shelving for upper cabinets; upper cabinets placed lower than at conventional height; wall oven and below counter microwave; and wide traffic paths around and throughout the kitchen. For more views of this successful combination of accessibility and beautiful aesthetics, see my portfolio.
