aging in place
Aging in place is the ability to continue to live in one's home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level. Studies indicate a majority of Baby Boomers want to stay in their current homes into retirement. Designed for younger people, most homes will need modification to compensate for seniors' changing physical abilities as they age. To meet this need, Joan Mullen Woods advises homeowners, builders and remodelers in retrofitting for aging in place or building new, barrier-free homes according to the principles of universal design. She has the professional designation of Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) from the National Association of Home Builders. The only national program of its kind, CAPS teaches professionals how to modify a home for safety and accessibility while ensuring an aesthetically pleasing environment.
